A: Yogic poses can be adapted to a wide range of abilities. The essence of yogic practice is to reconnect with your body where it is right now, to understand your present strengths and needs, to clarify your goals and work towards them at your own pace with patience and compassion. You do not have to be flexible to practice yoga (just like your house doesn’t have to be clean for hiring a maid). Flexibility, strength, balance, and the peace of mind come to you with practice. The only prerequisite for practicing yoga is being able to breathe.
Q: What should I bring to my Peace Yoga class?
A: Please wear comfortable stretchy clothing and bring your personal yoga mat. A thicker mat will provide more cushioning and may be better for a beginner practitioner. We recommend bringing a long-sleeved sweater and socks to wear during the relaxation portion of the class where you will be resting. Peace Yoga is a fully equipped studio with a bathroom/change room, mat storage and a variety of yoga props: bolsters, blocks, straps, blankets and eye pillows. Please remember to refrain from using scented perfumes or lotions before coming to class for the comfort of all students.
Q: What is Thai Yoga Massage?
A: Thai Yoga Massage is an ancient Ayurvedic art that is the physical application of loving kindness. Also described as “assisted Hatha yoga,” the whole-body massage is performed on a large padded surface on the floor while the recipient is fully clothed. The practitioner moves the recipient through a series of positions, which are similar to yoga poses, and uses the palm of her hand and her thumbs to apply pressure along subtle energy lines, similar to acupuncture meridians. Thai Yoga Massage brings many benefits including reduced muscle tension, improved circulation, as well as a boost to the immune system and metabolism. In addition to balancing the energies in the body, it also stimulates the relaxation response and calms the mind.
Q: What should I wear to Thai Yoga Massage?
A: Please wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing to allow for maximum movement during the treatment. Women may be more comfortable without a bra.
Q: What should I expect at my massage?
A: We will start with a discussion of your general health and needs, over a cup of herbal tea or a glass of water. The massage will begin seated on the floor for a short meditation. Then, Irina will begin moving your body through a series of positions. She will ask you to sit or lie down, depending on the work she is doing. After an hour of this bodywork, you will leave feeling refreshed and clear minded. Irina will offer herbal tea and water as liquids are always beneficial after massage to help with detoxification.
